Gerald Eze

Ogbu Oja

Gerald Eze is a phenomenal Nigerian musician and cultural ambassador. The musicianship of a truly inspired Igbo-African musician unfolds like a life journey. In the case of Gerald Eze Mmaduabuchi (GEM), a rising global musician from the “Land of The Rising Sun” (South Eastern Nigeria), it is a journey from a rich ancestry of music which has been passed on from his great grandfather to his grandfather.
He has come fully positioned to continue the musical ancestry of his family which is rooted in Igbo spirituality and social life.
Eze however, like a free spirit, is expressing himself in a way that is relevant to his time, while carrying on the Igbo identity which makes him a rare GEM.
In the traditional Igbo societies of yore, one would walk into the village square and hear the sounds of the Oja syncopating to the beats of the Igba (drums). But in this time and age, one could walk into Jazzhole in Lagos, Institute of Jamaica, Kingston, David Zwirner Art Gallery, New York, or the Wigmore Hall in London, and hear Eze’s Oja blending with and syncopating to Jazz, Reggae, Western Classical Music, Afrobeats, Hi-hop, etc., in a style that is revolutionary and exquisite.

Upcoming Concert – Sat 19 Jul 2025, 7.30pm
